Getting your Design Portfolio online... websites to consider
August 30, 2009
In this day and age whether you're an architecture student, a graphic designer, or a fashion intern you need to have your creative work online. It really isn't enough to simply email portfolio samples to people that request them anymore. Be proactive and set up an online portfolio; it is so much easier to send a potential employer a link to your personal online portfolio than to mess around sending huge file attachments that take up precious inbox space. Okay, so no one cares about the amount space your attachments take up, but there are some really good reasons to consider setting up an online portfolio:
- Having an online portfolio allows potential employers to view a greater body of work; therefore they get a better sense of your style.
- Even if a company you're interested in isn't hiring it's harmless to send someone a link to say 'this is who I am in case you ever need me'.
- An online portfolio can always stay current; so you're constantly showing off your latest and greatest!
Having your creative work online is key in landing great design internships! Listed are a couple of free sites that will help you get started:
- Carbonmade - Carbonmade has easy and instant file upload and you can track people that visit your portfolio through Google analytics. The cost to setup your design portfolio through Carbonmade is free for up to five projects with 35 images.
- FigDig - FigDig is a little more stringent with who they allow to post to their website. You must have quality work to post with FigDig and they allow you to upload high definition portfolio samples; the maximum amount of file uploads with FigDig is eight portfolio samples.
- Posterous - Posterous is a blogger's website; still a great way to show off your work! With Posterous opposed to uploading your work directly to the website you email your files to them and your information is instantly posted to your own Posterous personal site.
- Coroflot - Coroflot is one of my personal favorites. With Coroflot you get a personal URL, free traffic reports, unlimited file uploads and an easy to use interface - oh... and it's completely free!
